PM ROOFTOP SOLAR SCHEME
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in the budget speech that the Centre’s rooftop
solarisation scheme, introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 22, 2024, will off er free
electricity up to 300 units every month.
 The plan comes under the Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana, and will benefi t around 10 million
(one crore) households by allowing them to sell their surplus electricity (to DISCOMS).
 It is estimated that the project will help these households save between ₹15,000 and ₹18,000
annually, Sitharaman noted in her speech.
 Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana is aimed at providing electricity to low and middle-income
families through rooftop solar installations.
 Under rooftop installation, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are fi xed atop a building, home, or a
residential property.Background:
 To generate solar power by installing solar panels on the roof of the houses, the Ministry of New
and Renewable Energy, is implementing the Grid-connected Rooftop Solar Scheme (Phase-II).
 Under this scheme the Ministry is providing 40% subsidy for the fi rst 3 kW and 20% subsidy
beyond 3 kW and upto 10 kW.
 The scheme is being implemented in the states by local Electricity Distribution Companies
(DISCOMs).
 Residential consumers can apply online to install rooftop solar plants under the MNRE scheme.
They pay for the installation by deducting the subsidy provided by the Ministry.
Objectives of the scheme:
 The main goal is to encourage residential, industrial, and commercial enterprises to install small
SPV power producing plants and rooftop SPV systems that are connected to the grid.
 To promote environmentally friendly solar electricity generation
 To establish favorable conditions for corporate enterprise, state government, and individual
involvement in the solar energy industry.
 To establish favorable conditions for the grid’s integration of solar energy from small plants and
rooftops.
