NO CONFIDENCE MOTION
Why in News
“The Congress party has decided to bring a no-confi dence motion against the ruling Bharatiya Janta
Party (BJP)-Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) coalition government on “failure of the government of all the
fronts”.
No-confi dence motions and confi dence motions are trust votes, used to test or demonstrate the
support of Lok Sabha for the government in power.
The government resigns if a majority of members support a no-confi dence motion, or reject a
confi dence motion.
Related Provisions- Article 75(3) of the Constitution states that the government is collectively
responsible to Lok Sabha.
Under Rule 198 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Lok Sabha,
Amember has to move a written notice before 10 am
The Rules of Procedure state that the motion must be discussed within 10 days of being
introduced.
A motion of no-confi dence is moved with the support of at least 50 members.
Indira Gandhi faced the most number of no-confi dence motions in the history of independent
India.
The fi rst one was moved by Acharya J B Kripalani against the government headed by Prime Minister
Jawaharlal Nehru IN 1963 over his China Policy.
The fi rst no-confi dence motion that led to the falling of a government was moved by Y B Chavan
in 1979 against the government of Prime Minister Morarji Desai.
