NO CONFIDENCE MOTION
Why in News
“The Congress party has decided to bring a no-confi dence motion against the ruling Bharatiya Janta 
Party (BJP)-Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) coalition government on “failure of the government of all the 
fronts”.
 No-confi dence motions and confi dence motions are trust votes, used to test or demonstrate the 
support of Lok Sabha for the government in power.
 The government resigns if a majority of members support a no-confi dence motion, or reject a 
confi dence motion. 
 Related Provisions- Article 75(3) of the Constitution states that the government is collectively 
responsible to Lok Sabha. 
 Under Rule 198 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Lok Sabha, 
 Amember has to move a written notice before 10 am 
 The Rules of Procedure state that the motion must be discussed within 10 days of being 
introduced. 
 A motion of no-confi dence is moved with the support of at least 50 members. 
 Indira Gandhi faced the most number of no-confi dence motions in the history of independent 
India.
 The fi rst one was moved by Acharya J B Kripalani against the government headed by Prime Minister 
Jawaharlal Nehru IN 1963 over his China Policy.
 The fi rst no-confi dence motion that led to the falling of a government was moved by Y B Chavan 
in 1979 against the government of Prime Minister Morarji Desai.
