KOKBOROK LANGUAGE
Why in News
“Tripura Education Board has allowed the use of Kokborok in examinations. Earlier, the board had 
allowed only the Bengali script.”
 Kokborok (or Tripuri) is a Tibeto-Burman language of the Indian state of Tripura and neighboring 
areas of Bangladesh.
 It is one of the state languages of Tripura notifi ed on January 19, 1979.
 The word Kokborok comes from the words “kok” which means “verbal” and “borok” which 
means “people” or “human”.
 Kokborok is part of the Bodo-Garo sub-group of the Sino-Tibetan family. It can be traced back to at 
least the 1st century AD when the historical record of Tripuri kings started to be written down 
in a book called the Rajratnakar.
