KOKBOROK LANGUAGE
Why in News
“Tripura Education Board has allowed the use of Kokborok in examinations. Earlier, the board had
allowed only the Bengali script.”
Kokborok (or Tripuri) is a Tibeto-Burman language of the Indian state of Tripura and neighboring
areas of Bangladesh.
It is one of the state languages of Tripura notifi ed on January 19, 1979.
The word Kokborok comes from the words “kok” which means “verbal” and “borok” which
means “people” or “human”.
Kokborok is part of the Bodo-Garo sub-group of the Sino-Tibetan family. It can be traced back to at
least the 1st century AD when the historical record of Tripuri kings started to be written down
in a book called the Rajratnakar.
