INSAT-3DS
Why in News
“The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to launch a new satellite called INSAT-3DS on
February 17 from Sriharikota.”
It weighs 2,274 kilograms and is funded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.
Designed to help monitor and track various natural disasters such as cyclones, monsoon systems,
and thunderstorms.
It will help scientists observe the atmosphere, land, and oceans.
INSAT-3DS is part of ISRO’s Third Generation Meteorological Satellite series. It will orbit the Earth from a fi xed position in space, known as geostationary orbit.
This means it will stay over the same spot on Earth, allowing for continuous monitoring of weather
patterns.
The INSAT-3DS satellite has four main tools, or “payloads”:
An Imager that takes pictures of the Earth in six diff erent wavelengths to help identify various
atmospheric conditions like humidity.
A Sounder that measures vertical profi les of the atmosphere, providing information on
temperature and humidity levels.
A Data Relay Transponder that helps in transmitting data.
A Satellite aided Search and Rescue Transponder that assists in search and rescue operations 2.SWATI PORTAL
Why in News
“The government has launched the SWATI (Science for Women- A Technology & Innovation) portal,
a database highlighting accomplishments of Indian women in STEMM.”
Aimed at creating a single online portal representing Indian Women and Girls in STEMM (Science,
Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Medicine)
An initiative of Inter Academy Panel (IAP) on Women in Science, Technology, Engineering,
Mathematics & Medicine (STEMM)
This is a complete interactive database; and the fi rst-of-its-kind in India which is developed, hosted
and maintained by the National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR), New Delhi.
Developed by the National Institute of Plant Genome Research (NIPGR) to address the gender gap
in sciences.
